Modern Warfare 3 Breaks Avatar’s Record: One Billion in 16 Days

on December 12, 2011 2:30 PM

Once upon a time the movie Avatar used to hold the record for the fastest trip to earning one billion dollars: 17 days. I write in past tense, because that record has now been broken… by a video game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 managed to pull the same stunt with one day to spare: only 16 days from zero to one billion. That’s quite an acceleration right there.

It’s really no wonder that the movie industry feels threatened by the rise of video games, with loud-mouthed critics that will not be named saying that games will never be art and similar silly statements. With box office revenue dropping and gaming becoming more and more popular, we might need to be prepared to become mainstream, losing our beloved niche status. I’m almost sad…
