New game announcements are always exciting for bringing something new and different to the table…but this time, developer Unknown Worlds (previously of Natural Selection 2) may be trying out a whole new genre entirely, claiming their new game may be part of “a genre of which we do not believe has yet been invented.”

Unknown Worlds has announced their latest project called Subnautica, a unique title that the studio says will be a combination of “role playing, sandbox, exploration, and cinematic games” where players will build submarines and test out various research equipment to explore the ocean floor. The studio also mentioned that:

Subnautica aims to elicit a feeling of experiencing the unknown: a sense that you are exploring an untouched world, not knowing how far, or how deep you can go.”

While Unknown Worlds says that the project is still only in its very early stages of prototyping and development, you can check out an introduction video from the studio to get a first-hand “welcome” to the world of Subnautica:
