Netflix Streaming App for PS3 Hits October 18th

We reported last week that Sony said streaming Netflix would go disc-less sometime during the month of October. Now, according to the PlayStation Blog, we have a date. Next week, on October 18th, you’ll be able to enjoy disc-free streaming movies and TV shows via this new app, which has been designed from the ground up for the PS3. The interface will be changing from what it is now, to make it more streamlined and easier to navigate. They’ve also added 1080i output and full 5.1 Dolby surround sound for the streaming videos that support it. Of course, search functionality will be front and center, as well. The question here is – will it still be updated on Netflix’s side of things, or will they now have to go through Sony to update the application?

One of the reasons it’s taking the Xbox 360 Netflix app to get search functionality is because Netflix has to go through Microsoft for all their updates, so will this now be the case with Sony? One would hope not, but only time will tell. Still, not needing a disc to watch Netflix streaming content on the PS3 is going to be awesome. After the break I’ve put the video Sony put together to show off the new app and some of its major features.
