New Expansion for Magicka Announced

Magicka is an awesome game.  In spite of its surprisingly high end requirements and occasional problems with running, it is a lot of fun, and very funny.  Humor is something so few games pull off well, but Magicka seems to get it right.  The gameplay also deserves some accolades for being challenging, yet fun.  Or just plain fun if you have 3 friends to play with.  That is why it is great to hear that Magicka will have yet another expansion.  This one will be titled The Stars are Left.  Hit the jump for all the details and a trailer.

The first thing I noticed about the press release that Paradox sent us is the fact that the title was originally written in a Lovecraftian language.  I mean that literally.  It is headlined “Ph’nglui Mglw’nafh Cthulhu Magicka Wgah’nagl Fhtagn.”  I can only assume that translates to “Magicka Gets R’lyeh Creepy in Newest, Biggest Expansion Yet,” as I don’t speak the language of Cthulhu and the Elder Gods, and that is what the press release states as a subtitle.

Clearly, the new expansion, an adventure campaign, takes place in a horror-mystery setting  inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos.  The new campaign will also include a bunch of nice new things.

  • An all-new adventure, several levels long, allowing players to get lost in space and time
  • 2 new challenge maps
  • 2 new robes
  • 2 new bosses
  • 5 new achievements
  • 7 new enemies
  • “Considerably more than 2 new items and Magicks”

In addition to the various Lovecraftian parodies, the game promises to make fun of Minecraft, so that alone should get it some more attention.

The final awesome part of the announcement is that if one person gets the expansion, all of their friends do as well.  So long as the host player in a co-op group owns the content, every one of their co-wizards will be able to co-experience the mind-killing terror of the new expansion.

All in all some cool news.  This will very likely make me pick Magicka back up, as I am very curious to see how they mix Cthulhu and Minecraft.
