Nintendo Game Boy Honored

Today the National Toy Hall of Fame has inducted three toys for the class of 2009. Ball, Big Wheel and Game Boy, have all been added next to toy greats such as Monopoly, Mr. PotatoHead, Lego, Play-Doh, the Hula Hoop, Marbles and others (for the rest just click here). Nintendo’s most successful system of all time is being recognized for putting portable gaming on the map. The Game Boy is not only responsible for popularizing portable gaming, but revolutionizing it too. With its many iterations and enhancements (pocket, color, advance, micro), it has helped legitimize portable gaming as something that can grow alongside new technology.

It’s too bad the Game Boy series has been discontinued, but we gamers should all thank it for the impact it has had on gaming today. Who knows what we would be doing right now on our train rides, doctor visits, and camping trips. The DS and PSP would definitely not be where they are today without the Game Boy. Who knows? Maybe we all would still be playing our Tiger electronic handheld games. Cheers to you Game Boy! You will be in our hearts forever.
