Nintendo Undergoing Longer-Than-Usual Online Maintenance Next Week

on January 5, 2016 2:50 PM

While many gamers are still reeling from Sony’s unexpected online outages yesterday, Nintendo is prepping for some planned outages next week. The maintenance, beginning  January 11th at 8 PM ET and ending January 12th at 6 AM ET on both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, sets aside a ten hour timeslot where online services may be completely unavailable or throttled.

Why is this important? Most typical Nintendo maintenances are only five hours long, at most. So those looking between the lines may start wondering why they need double the time in a period of very few releases. Perhaps they are laying the groundwork for My Nintendo and Nintendo Accounts, slated for release in most countries March 2016? At the moment it is all guesswork, but we will see what dataminers manage to pull from the files.
