Overwatch Selling “Well Beyond Expectations” According to GameStop; Early Launch a “Progressive Move”

During GameStop’s quarterly financial conference call Chief Operating Officer Tony Bartel mentioned that Overwatch has been doing very well sales-wise at the prominent retailer.

“Overwatch exceeded our expectations, and it was a very strong launch for us.”

Bartel also praised Activision Blizzard’s move to allow physical sales of Overwatch before the actual midnight launch of the game, calling it a “very progressive move.” This allowed GameStop to have two full days before the servers lit up to actually sell the game. The results was “a significant increase, well beyond our expectations” of the game, and Bartel thinks Activision saw an improvement in sales as well. He also thinks this kind of launch might become more widespread in the industry in general.

GameStop International President Michael Mauler added that the same result was seen internationally, and even to a higher degree where download speeds are slower.

He also mentioned that doing the opposite and pushing a digital preference hurts the customers and can result in lower sales and reservations. On the other hand, allowing early physical sales for Overwatch yielded phenomenal results.
