Overkill Software and Sony Online Entertainment are working hard to bring some holiday cheer to their online bank robbery game, Payday: The Heist.  Normally I pass on stuff like this, but the DLC is actually pretty creative.  Rather than simply giving players the gift of new content, Payday makes the player work for it, as they need to find presents hidden in the various levels of the game.  Find it, and you get more than a simple achievement.  You also get a new holiday themed mask with which to continue your bank robbery.

Sony and Overkill seem to be taking a page from Team Fortress 2's playbook as they are making players work for their holiday unlocks.  In addition to the holiday mask, there is a nice little update planned for the game.  For these additional details on the update, hit the jump.

The update will add a few new touches to the game:

  • Player Drop-in: This will allow players to join ongoing games.
  • Improved Combat: Fighting and acting have been heavily improved! The team and enemies now pick better cover and firing positions, and use more intelligent firing lanes for suppression and sniping
  • New Masks: Choose one of the four all-new masks that have been added in celebration of the recently released military shooters
  • Additional Updates: Improved AI, smoother combat, grouping and aim, and more
Of all of these, I'm most curious about the new masks that have been added, as it seems like SOE might be taking some parody shots at Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3.  It's hard to argue with extra content, especially when fixes are added alongside it.
