2K and Firaxis revealed today that Philip II will be leading Spain in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI. Philip II was king of Spain during the peak of the Spanish Inquisition, and also brought Spain into a golden era of its culture.

This Civilization’s special ability is Treasure Fleet, which allows them to get extra yields from trade routes that go in between continents. They also can combine ships into fleets earlier than other Civs.

Spain’s special unit is the Conquistador. They get combat bonuses if who they are fighting believes in a different religion. The unit also gets a significant bonus if there is a Spanish Missionary, Inquisitor, or Apostle on their hex.

The country’s unique improvement is the Mission, which generates extra faith if on a different continent than the capital, and also generates science if built next to a campus.
