This week marks a big celebration as Saturday, February 27 will officially mark the 20th birthday of the Pokemon series, and in celebration there will be plenty of events all around the world that The Pokemon Company and Nintendo will be offering in celebration of catching ’em all.
A blog post on the official Pokemon 20 website outlined many of the celebrations, both in-person and online, that will take place across the world this coming Saturday in celebration of “Pokemon Day,” recognizing the 20th anniversary of the Pokemon series’ debut in Japan, on February 27th, 1996.
In the US, the newly-reopened Nintendo NY store in Manhattan will be hosting a full day of activities and events on February 27 for visitors to enjoy, while on the west coast Los Angeles’ JapanLA will host a special Pokemon pop-up shop on Saturday night for an opening celebration. The pop-up store will be open every day until March 27th for guests to get special Pokemon commemorative merchandise.
Participating Toys ‘R’ Us locations in the US will also host Pokemon Day events including special foil cards from the Pokemon Trading Card Game, an activity book, and a poster of the original 151 Pokemon while supplies last.
GameStop locations during the event will also offer a special “Mythical Pokemon” poster with the purchase of any Pokemon product, while guests can also pick up a special Mew plush doll at participating locations.
In terms of online events, the official Pokemon Twitch channel will shake things up with a “massive” Pokemon event starting at 10am ET/7am PT, featuring Pokemon discussions, gameplay, interviews, and more that will be available to view for all ages. The channel will also host a 24-hour marathon of classic Pokemon animation starting at 6pm ET/3pm PT, featuring episodes from the animated series, the films, and more.
In a final note, the blog post also reiterated that February 27th will also mark the release of Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow on the 3DS eShop (along with a New Nintendo 3DS bundle featuring Red/Blue), while those on iOS and Android can also download the official Pokemon Photo Booth app to take and share photos to help commemorate the event on social media. Players of the Pokemon TCG Online game on February 27 can also receive a set of special commemorative card sleeves by logging in.
Pokemon Day will officially kick off on February 27th, 2016.
