Yes, predictions were mostly true: The “Potato Sack” Portal 2 ARG that’s been running for the past few weeks definitely had to do with the premature release of the game on Steam. However, the means of release are really the surprise here: At noon eastern yesterday, a webpage that previously housed a mysterious countdown transformed into this, a page for the brand-new GLaDOS@Home initiative, whereby the nefarious AI hopes to gain enough power via distributed computing to start the Steam boot sequence early.
So if you want to donate cycles to GLaDOS and play Portal 2 early, all you have to do is play one of the 13 games included in the Potato Sack and contribute to its overall progress bar. Each time a bar is completed, some time will be knocked off the countdown. As of this writing, only The Wonderful End of the World has been completed, which moved back launch time by just under an hour. So we definitely won’t be getting the four-day premature launch some of us were hoping for, but it’s definitely something.
Get out there and start playing some indie games! It’s for the good of the gaming community.
