Today Square Enix announced via press release that the PS2 classic Star Ocean: Till the End of Time will be released for PS4 in Japan as Ultimate Hits HD: Star Ocean: Til the End of Time: Director's Cut.

As the name implies, the port will be based on the Director's Cut version originally released in 2004, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Star Ocean series.

The game will be ported to PS4 via the console's emulation technology, which has already been used for many other titles from the PS2 era.

The game will be rendered in 1080p, even if CGI cutscenes will still remain in their original resolution. Trophies, share play and remote play will be supported, and since the game will be a digital release only, the original necessity to swap between the two disks will be bypassed.

Star Ocean: Till the End of Time was originally released for PS2 in 2003 in Japan, as Star Ocean 3, then getting its Director's Cut version a year later, localized in both North America and Europe.

The new PS4 port will launch in 2017 in Japan, with no western release announced at the moment. That said, considering that the game is already localized, a launch in North America and Europe is likely.
