PS4 Exclusive Uncharted 4 Is Not “The Last of Us With Explosions;” Pacing is Still Very Important

Developers tend to learn a lot from previous games, but The Last of Us definitely wasn’t “Uncharted with zombies” (yes, I know those aren’t really zombies), and according to Lead Animator Jeremy Yates, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End won’t be “The Last of Us with explosions,” as he mentioned during a livestream hosted by GamesRadar.

”You could say the same thing, you know, would Uncharted 4 be The Last of Us with explosions? But it’s just not, and we’ve been really careful to kind of “own” Uncharted for what Uncharted is. Uncharted is big, Uncharted is this big adventure, and it’s just colorful and beautiful and inspiring, and it makes you just want to explore. Want to like move around the space, you know, it’s kinda like the happy place.

It feels like high adventure, somewhat blockbuster, absolutely, and we totally own that.”

That said, Yates explained that the care put on pacing is common between the two games:

“Something that we have carried on both games is kind of the highs and lows. You know, we really care about pacing. There’s a lot of games that we play that are on ten all the time. Everything is exploding, and it never stops.”

Yates mentioned that the Transformers movies are action all the time, and after a while you start glossing over it.

“There’s something about just pacing it right, where you really kind of build up to those big set pieces moments. Once you get through that set piece, you really need to kind of slow it down and just calm yourself and really play the story with those arcs.”

It’s definitely great to hear that, while Uncharted 4 will still be bombastic and powerful like the previous games of the series, it will offer moments of relaxation in which we can just explore and have fun in the world.
