According to a new study by ICO Partners, Overwatch and the PS4 dominated games media coverage in 2016.

The study reveals that Overwatch recorded twice as many articles in the media as its nearest rival, Pokemon Go. How many articles exactly? Well, according to ICO's numbers, which the company releases annually, the FPS received around 75,000 articles, while Pokemon Go recorded 35,000. Final Fantasy XV, Battlefield 1, and DOOM followed.

Speaking of Battlefield 1, it was covered in 40 percent more articles than its space rival: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which recorded about 12 percent less coverage than the previous series' installment.

It's worth noting that the monitoring of the press was largely restricted to specialist game-specific publications, meaning a considerable amount of coverage for Pokemon Go by a range of mainstream sites, magazines, etc., was not included.

However, Overwatch just didn't dominate 2016, it dominated all games in 2015, receiving 50% more coverage than any game in ICO Partner's 2015 figures.

CEO Thomas Bidaux had the following to say about Overwatch's impressive achievement, and also chimed in about the hype around No Man's Sky:

"Overwatch is striking in the sense that it is one of the only two new IPs in this ranking, alongside No Man's Sky. Many industry commenters pointed to No Man's Sky's hype as being the main reason for its fall from grace, but you have to give them credit here, when you see the game is in the top 15 most covered by media game of the year, while coming from a small independent studio. Even the Sony PR machine can't be the only thing at play here, as many very large productions didn't manage to make it in these rankings. The game's hype took on a life of its own, and got big."

Below, you can view the number of monthly articles in games media broken down by each month:

In terms of hardware/platforms, the PS4 was the one doing all the dominating, eclipsing Xbox One, its nearest competitor by 25%. However, despite losing out to the PS4, the Xbox One saw an uptick of 18 percent in coverage when compared to 2015. Meanwhile, the Wii U declined to the point of almost being surpassed by the Oculus Rift.
