Sony Computer Entertainment just announced that thanks to the strong sales in Japan, the PS4 has sold through (to actual customers) six million consoles in 57 countries around the world as of March 2nd.

In the press release that included the announcement Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Andrew House commented:

I am absolutely delighted that PS4 is off to such a great start in Japan. The responses we have received for the PS4 system's integrated social capabilities have been phenomenal, and I couldn't be more thrilled that gamers are utilizing these unique features to engage, share, play and connect with users around the world.  SCE will continue to expand the world of PlayStation by growing its library of breakthrough games and bringing more innovative features and services only possible on PS4.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia President Hiroshi Kawano also expressed his gratitude to the Japanese gamers for the support shown both with their purchases and with pre-orders before the console's release, and promised to "liven up" the Japanese video game market even further.

The announcement also mentioned that the distribution of the Japan exclusive "first limited pack" of the console (that included a free download code for Knack)  has now been discontinued, and has moved 370,000 units in the archipelago of the rising sun.

In addition to the news about hardware sales, we also learn that Killzone: Shadow Fall has sold 2.1 million units around the world and 13.7 Million PS4 games found a new and loving home (adding up retail and digital sales).

On top existing members, over half of those that purchased a PS4 also subscribed to PlayStation Plus, while the PlayStation App has been installed on 3.6 million smartphones.

Finally, more than 100 million "shares" were uploaded on Facebook and Twitter; 3.6 million of gameplay livestreams were broadcasted on Twitch and Ustream, and those were viewed 56 million times as of February 28th. 20% of the broadcasts on Twitch are from a PS4.

When Andrew House mentioned that the forecast for the PS4 was five million unit sold by the end of March at the Tokyo Game Show press conference, many shared doubts about that number. Looks like those doubts were indeed justified, but in the opposite way, as the prediction ended up being overly conservative.
