Greg Kasavin, Creative Director at Supergiant Games, today announced via the PlayStation Blog that his team's party-based RPG exploration and competitive action game Pyre will release with a multiplayer head-to-head versus mode when it launches next year.

Pyre's versus mode will play out like a one-on-one competitive action game. The objective is to extinguish the opponent’s ceremonial flame by grasping an object called the Celestial Orb, then diving into the flames with it, or simply throwing it in.

Presented alongside a new trailer, multiplayer will serve as a bonus on top of the single-player campaign. Kasavin mentioned the team's number one priority is still its single-player experience and that the multiplayer component was only something that the team would devote to if it could "pull it off without compromising on our ambitions for the single-player."

As of now, the multiplayer component will only be local. The team does want to feature online as well, but acknowledges that it's small and that a bad online component is worse for a game than having one at all.

Like previous title TransistorPyre will release exclusively on PC and PlayStation 4 in 2017. The game was revealed back in April.
