R-Type Dimensions Blasts its Way to Consoles on May 20

R-Type is one of the all time shoot-em-up classics from the good old days of gaming. It influenced a lot of the modern day games of its kind. It hasn’t seen the spotlight in quite some time but that’s about to change in a big way this May.

Tozai Games will release R-Type Dimensions which contains remastered versions of R-Type and R-Type II with HD graphics. R-Type will feature all eight original levels while R-Type II will have all six of its original levels. Though the games will be in HD you can also turn on the original 2D graphics for a true old school experience. The games will have new soundtracks as well and new features like Infinite Mode and Level Select.

Local co-op (or couch co-op) will also be a feature along with a slow motion play function, controller configuration, worldwide leaderboards, player stats and of course trophies. No word on online multiplayer at this time.

Personally speaking this is easily the best news I’ve heard all day. R-Type, along with its sequel, are some of my personal favorite games of all time and I can’t wait to get my hands on this to play it.

R-Type Dimensions will be available to download from the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade on May 20.
