The indie horror trend continues with Outlast; a first person survival horror experience from independent game studio Red Barrels. The teaser trailer shows viewers a brief glimpse of what to expect in the game, including the player being chased by a hostile…human?
The teaser actually gives quite a bit of information if you’re paying attention. The protagonist appears to be a reporter or investigator of some sort as we see them visiting a spooky mansion in what appears to be the middle of nowhere (which is always a great place to be in a horror story). The building is surrounded by a vast mountain landscape and we’re also show a long empty road leading up to the mansion.
I assume the protagonist is a reporter or investigator because once inside the building, we see them holding a camera which is being used to record images of a decapitated person. I’m tempted to say it’s some kind of swat team member but the brief shot of them isn’t clear enough for me to be sure. They’re definitely wearing some kind of uniform complete with a mask/helmet. The footage also shows the protagonist recording lots of blood splattered all over the floor and walls of the various rooms he travels through.
Obviously, in the post-Amnesia era, whenever anyone mentions the words ‘indie’ and ‘horror’ together the first thing to pop into your head is Frictional Games’ indie masterpiece. Of course, this brief footage shows similarities to Amnesia: The Dark Descent as it features the player fleeing from hostile foes instead of engaging them in a physical confrontation but Outlast appears to be a much more frantic and fast-paced affair.
Red Barrels is an independent developer made of several industry veterans. Here’s Red Barrels talking about Red Barrels and Outlast, too.
Founded in Montreal by industry veterans from some of the biggest game franchises in history, including Prince of Persia, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, and Uncharted, Red Barrels is an independent game studio focused on creating unforgettable single-player games.
Outlast is their first title, a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.
Outlast will be coming to PC digital download in 2013.
