Following the revelation that Robin would not be a part of the Batman: Arkham Origins story and the unveiling of the game's multi-player component (which features the boy wonder), Warner Bros. Montreal's Creative Director, Eric Holmes, has shed some light on the reason for the discrepancy between Robin's exclusion from single-player and inclusion in multi-player, as well as which of the five Robins it actually is.

Dick Grayson, the first Robin, will be Batman's sidekick in the multi-player portion of the game, as explained in a tweet to a fan by Holmes. The reason for the discrepancy is due to Arkham Origins' multi-player portion being "timeless" while the single-player is firmly rooted in the second year of Batman's war on crime (during which the dark knight had no sidekick). Theoretically, any character can appear in the game's multi-player. This leaves open the possibility for other popular characters such as Damian Wayne, Batgirl, Nightwing (Dick Grayson as an adult), and others to enter the fold. Interestingly enough, WB Montreal did not shut the door entirely on Batgirl being in the game when talking about her and Robin at Comic-Con last month - it is possible she may appear as multi-player character as well.

Batman: Arkham Origins is being developed by Warner Bros. Montreal and will be published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC on October 25th, 2013. A Vita version of the game, Batman: Arkham Origins – Blackgate, is also in development by Armature Studio and will be released on the same day.
