Grand Theft Auto V is a monster of a game, one that's been so successful it was breaking records just about immediately after release (as if anyone was surprised). But details on GTA V's multiplayer component, Grand Theft Auto Online, has had some gamers a little confused. That's why today Rockstar released some details about GTA Online, including what it will feature, how Rockstar intends to respond to their community, and some new screenshots released.

The Intention of GTA Online

Rockstar made GTA Online to create their first fully realized and living online world, one where the player creates their own narrative by being able to do anything they want, with up to fifteen other players. Players can catch a movie, race, play sports, or take on missions, either as a lone wolf, as part of a Crew (via Rockstar's Social Club network), or with other freelancing mercenaries. Players will also be able to create their own character, and fully customize and personalize their own cars, garages and more.

Reputation, Earning Cash, and Spending Cash

Reputation will be earned as an indicator of your skills and experience: the more you do in GTA Online, the higher it goes. Reputation helps players rank up and gain access to new features, weapons and criminal contacts.

Cash can be earned by doing the activities listed above, or by spending real money to buy GTA$ that can be spent in-game. Rockstar promises that this will not force players to "pay to win," simply be used as an option for players who'd rather earn unlockables faster. The developers also promise that while those who play the single player can't carry their money and assets over to the multiplayer, they will be able to earn money much faster with the Online portion than the Story mode.

An Ever-Evolving Experience

Rockstar wants to be clear: GTA Online will occasionally have crashes, glitches, crazy bugs and balance issues, and who knows what else: they actually referenced the two glitches discovered this last week in the Story mode, including the "Superman glitch" and a glitch that duplicates Franklin's aunt, and even the "Donkey Lady" from Red Dead Redemption, to show how even the self-contained experience of the campaign has some odd occurrences.

This is why they're counting on community feedback, which they'll be encouraging from day one, by introducing the eventual GTA Online Forums on the Social Club, and by encouraging players to email them.

More to Come

There's several planned GTA Online content updates coming, including:

  • The Content Creator: The Content Creator will launch with tools to tailor and publish your own Deathmatches & Races.
  • The Beach Bum Pack: Featuring 4 new amazing beach fun vehicles, over 300 new items of incredible down tempo leisure wear and 2 new but not remotely relaxing weapons.
  • Capture the Flag: GTA Online’s take on the classic CTF mode including the ability to make your own using The Content Creator.
  • Heists: This update will introduce full-on cooperative Heist missions that will require careful planning, teamwork and sharp execution – along with the Heist Planning Board for your apartment.

Rockstar says that these updates will be free, and plans to release more details during the launch period. They encourage players to share as much relevant feedback as possible to make a smooth experience for all.
