There are some people out there who believe that the best science-fiction television series had a 14-episode run in 2002 and a film released in 2005. While I am not one of them, I know what it is like to love something that does not have the same pull as other franchises, and thus has a smaller chance at a reboot or long-overdue sequel. Firefly and Serenity, respectively, have emerged as cult-hits in the science-fiction realm, and fans have urged creator Joss Whedon to return to the series on Netflix – given the service’s newfound proclivity to revive cult shows (Arrested Development).
The franchise has seen numerous iterations across a variety of mediums including literature and board games. This is not the television revival that fans were clamoring for, but it is… something. Qmx and Fox Interactive have released a teaser trailer for a game in development based on the series, entitled Firefly Online. Not much is known, though that will probably change as San Diego Comic-Con gets underway.
Firefly Online is being produced by Qmx, Spark Plug Games, and Fox Digital Entertainment for tablets and mobile devices and will release in Summer 2014. Developers have stated that they have not ruled out a PC port of the game. You can check out the teaser trailer below.
