Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Already Hits $699,000

Earlier today at Sony’s E3 press conference, Yu Suzuki announced the revival of the long-awaited Shenmue franchise and its crowd-funded project via Kickstarter by showing a brief video to fans and the goal to make this a completely fan-made project.

Suzuki states,

If Shenmue 3 was going to get made, I wanted to make it with the fans. Through Kickstarter, I knew that could happen. Together, with Shenmue fans everywhere, I knew we could build the game that the series deserves.

Initially, the Kickstarter project is intended to reach $2,000,000.00 in order for the project to make its way onto the PlayStation 4 and PC, respectively. As of this writing, the total amount pledged by 8,004 backers has been $699,687.00 — this is, of course, with 31 days still left to go.

Of course, as with most Kickstarter projects, the Kickstarter page indicates that if the funding goal is not reached, Shenmue 3 will “not go forward.” However, based on the rate at which the pledges are coming in, we can confidently speculate that the project will undoubtedly reach its $2,000,000.00 in no time. As of now, we can probably say that this may be the fastest growing pledge to hit Kickstarter since Exploding Kittens, which was 36,000% funded with 26 days to go.
