The confirmation of new Super Smash Bros. games for Nintendo’s newly revealed Wii U console and the already pretty stale Nintendo 3DS left series fans in a coma of excitement. The lack of release or development details for the titles kept savvy fans like me from getting too pumped though, because for all we know, the game could be multiple years from completion. According to producer Masahiro Sakurai, that theory wasn’t too far from the mark.
The game isn’t only 0% complete, but development has barely started at all. He told Famitsu magazine that:
“Right now, we’re devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus. We’ve got no plans whatsoever. It makes me cringe, and I’m not sure it’s the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members.”
Will the announcement actually attract useful new development staff? That remains to be seen. What’s clear though is that the wait for a new Smash Bros. game has only just begun. The SSB titles are never short on quality and I more than trust Nintendo to make sure that the new game delivers, but I for one don’t really enjoy being strung along for years at a time.
