SNK Trademarks “Samurai Spirits” in Japan – Is the Popular Fighting Series Making a Comeback?

Few things bring the old and glorious days of the Neo Geo back to life like thinking about the Samurai Showdown series, and looks like those memories might be awakened again thanks to two trademarks filings by SNK Playmore.

The filings, submitted to the Japan Trademark and Patent Office on July 30th, are for “Samurai Spirits” in English and Japanese (サムライスピリッツ ). “Samurai Spirits” was the original Japanese name of the Samurai Showdown series.

While SNK already has multiple trademarks for the name, this isn’t a renewal, as those  will expire between 2015 and 2019.

The trademarks have been filed under the classes 9 (games), 28 (toys) and 41 (online games). Interestingly, they mention “video game software” and not” software for mobile games,” as it’s common in Japan when trademarking a title for smartphones, so there definitely is hope for a return of the popular fighting series on a proper big screen.

Will Haomaru, Nakoruru, Galford and the other protagonists of Samurai Showdown raise their swords again? Only time will tell, but I most certainly hope so.
