Last week, the European Steam page for Sonic Mania preemptively leaked an August release date for the upcoming platformer before later being changed. Today, we have received a new trailer for the game along with official release date learning that last week’s leak was in fact correct — Sonic Mania will be arriving on August 15.

If you haven’t paid attention to the Sonic franchise in awhile, then Sonic Mania might be the game that will win you back. While the Sonic series has taken many different shapes and forms over the years, Sonic Mania is going back to the roots of the franchise and will feature gameplay similar to that of the old-school Sega Genesis games. That means side-scrolling levels that you have to race through as fast as possible.

The franchise’s three main protagonists — Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles — will all be playable in Sonic Mania and each character will support their own unique abilities. Sonic will be able to move the fastest of the three characters, Tails will (obviously) be able to fly, and Knuckles will be able to glide through the air and climb up walls.

The levels in Sonic Mania will also feature some that are new and some that are a bit more familiar. Gameplay has already been revealed for notable old-school levels like Green Hill Zone and Flying Battery Zone — both of which include the same catchy tunes from the past — while new areas like Mirage Saloon Zone contain the same aesthetic and feel of the aforementioned levels. It’ll be fun to see how these new levels fit in alongside the old levels that many of us have grown up with.

To go along with today’s announcement of Sonic Mania’s release date, the game is now available for pre-order on all platforms — PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. You can check out the newly released trailer for Sonic Mania below to help hold you over until release on August 15.
