Sony Computer Entertainment UK Managing Director Fergal Gara has no doubt on the fact that the console has been built with a core audience in mind, and that took no small amount of “painful and expensive” decisions. Yet he thinks that casual gamers can be pulled in as well thanks to the lower price point, as he told CVG in an interview.
We are absolutely focused on the core gamer. Everything in the machine, and the painful and expensive decisions we took to assemble it, has been built for the core gamer. But with a relatively assessable price point on day one, there’s no reason not to say you can’t pull in the casual gamer earlier in the cycle than usual.
Personally, I can definitely see how some decisions would be “painful,” especially for a corporation like Sony that has been posting losses for a while. But here in Italy we have a proverb: “He that wants to become beautiful, has to suffer a bit.” Translated to English it loses the rhyme and doesn’t sound as good, but it’s true.
