Sony Purchases OnLive’s Patents and Assets As Cloud Gaming Service Closes

on April 2, 2015 7:59 PM

OnLive announced today that the cloud gaming service will close on April 30th, 2015. Anyone that subscribed after March 28th will be refunded.

Unspecified “assets” belonging to OnLive, alongside over a hundred of cloud gaming patents have been acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment, and will go to strengthen its already solid cloud gaming portfolio born with the acquisition of OnLive’s former rival Gaikai.

This seems to be a signal that Sony is fully determined to pursue cloud gaming in all possible directions. It’ll be interesting to see what will come out of this, but for now one thing is for sure: OnLive is no more.
