Sony Trademarks “Corpse Run;” Another New Game Incoming, or Is it Something Else?

Sony Online Entertainment filed on July 21st for the registration of the name “Corpse Run” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The trademark is registered for class 9 (games) and 41 (online games), and it’s probably related to a MMO, a genre which is the bed and breakfast of Sony Online Entertainment.

While it’s possible for it to be linked to the open world zombie MMO H1Z1, the game still isn’t released, so it’s a bit strange for the name of an expansion to be registered this early.

“Corpse Run” is part of the MMORPG lingo, and indicates a situation in which players have to “run” to their corpse either to revive themselves or to recover their equipment before it’s looted. It’s possible that SOE might be looking to register the expression itself for use in its games (pretty much like Electronic Arts trademarked “Realm vs Realm”), but this kind of action would probably incur in opposition from quite a few MMO developers.

Just to bringĀ an example, the term is widely used in World of Warcraft, butĀ that’s definitely not the only case.
