This morning Square Enix London has finally lifted the veil on that unannounced titled they’ve been teasing. Sleeping Dogs, set in modern-day Hong Kong, is a gritty cop drama the will feature open world exploration and both shooter and hand-to-hand combat gameplay.
Sleeping Dogs drops players into the shoes of Wei Shen, an undercover cop tasked with infiltrating and taking down one the world’s top criminal organization, the Hong Kong Triads. Players will be given free range to explore the frenetic island-city and take part in a story of fierce loyalty and betrayal.
Square promises the game will feature opportunities for “intense shoot-outs, adrenaline-fueled street race and intense, brutal martial arts combat.” If this sounds like you cup of tea, keeping reading. Fights will require players to exercise a tight sequence of martial arts moves in order to tuck their opponents into a dirt nap. But it gets better: players can use items in the surrounding environment to execute a takedown, including refrigerator doors and telephone booths.
“From the moment you pick up the controller and experience the blend of driving, close combat and shooting you know you’re playing something fresh and a bit special,” said Square Enix London Studios general manager Lee Singleton. “Sleeping Dogs has one of the best melee combat systems out there – it’s super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG’s proven heritage in driving games, a first class story and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it.”
“Working on Sleeping Dogs has been such a huge passion for the team at United Front Games and we’re really pleased to be working with Square Enix London Studios,” added executive producer at United Front Games Stephen Van Der Mescht. “The extensive experience that both studios have in creating compelling open world gameplay and rich, rewarding combat makes for a perfect partnership. Working together we’re ensuring Sleeping Dogs is the most intense and immersive game it can be.”
Sleeping Dogs will be released in the second half of 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Check out the game’s announcement trailer below.
