Square Enix Releasing Vintage Dragon Quest Titles on Smartphones in Japan

Dragon Quest is immensely popular in Japan, so much so that now it looks like Japanese gamers will be able to take some of the classic Dragon Quest titles with them on the go wherever they want.

Square Enix has announced that they will be bringing over their previous entries of the series (specifically Dragon Quest I – VIII) and porting them over to smartphones in Japan together with the release of a completely new smartphone-centric game, Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light.

Whether these will be complete remakes or ports from previous iterations of the games will remain to be seen, but nonetheless it’s exciting news for Japanese gamers to be getting the full Dragon Quest series available on mobile devices.

Does this mean that a Western release may be on the horizon? With Square Enix releasing older Final Fantasy titles on mobile, it’s definitely a possibility, but unfortunately we’ll have to wait to see if there is any indication of a US release. I know I would love to have some Dragon Quest VIII on the go: commutes would never be the same.

You can take a look at a few screenshots of the mobile version of Dragon Quest VIII below, along with the Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light logo
