SquareEnix Patenting Battle Systems?

on December 29, 2009 2:38 PM

I know for the past few weeks or so, it has been a non-stop barrage of JRPG news and stores. Can you really complain about it? I sure as hell can’t, and I’m sure neither can Chad (our resident JRPG specialist). With that said, comes the latest and probably most obscure news of all. If you can recall a few weeks back Square Enix designer Tetsuya Nomura was the talk of the town for announcing an announcement. That announcement had fans of all things Square simply creaming their pants, and speculation immediately began as to what it was Nomura was speaking of. Well a discovery by the guys at Silconera, shows plans of a battle system recently patented by Square Enix. The patent makes references to an in-battle dynamic character switching function. It also shows it as being prepped for the PSP. Doesn’t mean it would be limited to the handheld but judging from the patent drawings it is addressed directly. One thing that has to be said is, that many patents never come into fruition so this news must be taken with a grain of salt.
