SuperData Digital Sales April 2017: PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Makes $34 Million; FIFA 17 Tops Console Charts

EA's FIFA 17 tops SuperData's digital sales charts for the month of April, while PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds racks in an impressive $34 million.

Tracking firm SuperData has released its monthly worldwide digital sales for the month of March, revealing that EA's September 2016 release, FIFA 17, was the top-seller digitally on consoles for the month of April. Meanwhile, new major player on the scene, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which launched on March 23rd on PC via Steam Early Access, racked in $34 million USD in the month of April.

In a more broad view of the the digital industry, the market grew 9% year-over-year in April to $7.7B. More specifically mobile grew 8% year-over-year, meanwhile free-to-play MMO segment grew a healthy 27%. However, mobile and F2P growth was offset by slight declines in social, premium PC, console, and pay-to-play segments.

Breaking down segments, SuperData notes that both Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands (the best-selling game at retail/digital last month and the best selling game at retail so far this year) and Mass Effect: Andromeda experienced steep declines in digital revenue in April following their release last month. According to SuperData the decline may be due to mediocre reviews. While BioWare and Ubisoft declined a bit, EA had a great month, with FIFA 17 and Battlefield 1 topping the console charts. FIFA 17 specifically jumed double-digits in digital revenue month-on-month.

Meanwhile in the PC space, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds topped the month's premium PC digital revenue, despite being an Early Access title. Further, it even broke into the Top 10 PC overall list. But perhaps most notably Bluehole Studio’s is estimated to have made $34 million in gross digital revenue in the month, a very impressive number for a game that took the industry by storm rather unexpectedly.
