Today, Supergiant Games announced the release date for its upcoming action-RPG Pyre and it will be arriving just around the corner. Pyre will be launching on both PS4 and PC on July 25.
This news comes today via a PlayStation Blog post where the game’s creative director Greg Kasavin shared many details on Pyre. If you’re unfamiliar with the game, then here’s a quick breakdown for you via Kasavin:
Pyre is a party-based RPG in which you lead a band of exiles to freedom through ancient competitions spread across a vast, mystical purgatory. Who shall return to glory, and who shall remain in exile to the end of their days? Find out during the course of the single-player campaign (and maybe rack up a new Platinum Trophy while you’re at it).
Pyre comes from the same team who created Bastion and Transistor, both of which were critically praised upon release. Unlike the lone protagonists seen in those previous titles, Pyre allows you to transition between three different characters. Each of these characters — one small, one medium, one large — contain the same abilities that can be used in different ways.
For instance, the small character will be able to move around the map quickly, but its attack power — called an aura blast — will cover much less ground. By comparison, the heavy character will move slowly but has a large spread when using its own aura blast. You must learn to utilize all three characters to the best of their abilities to then defeat your opponents and win the match.
Supergiant revealed last year at PlayStation Experience that Pyre will feature a multiplayer mode, which is a first for the studio. The multiplayer plays the same way as the single-player but of course, now allows you to play against your friends.
On a personal note, I went hands-on with Pyre last year at PSX and it was a ton of fun. The best way I can describe it would be to say that it plays like basketball with RPG elements. Winning a match is incredibly satisfying and playing against your friends makes for even more fun.
Pyre is available for pre-order now on both Steam and PSN. PlayStation plus members who pre-order Pyre will also receive 10% off of its $19.99 price, so be sure to jump on that now before its release on July 25. Below you can check out a previous trailer released for Pyre showcasing the multiplayer mode of the game.
