If you’re thinking about getting a Vita, or getting one as a gift for the holidays, the time to buy may be right now. Target’s online store has listed a PlayStation Vita bundle for only $179.99. With most Vita bundles reaching close to the $300 dollar mark this could be a huge gambit by target to move the handheld gaming consoles, or foreshadowing of a price drop across the board. Sony has not announced a price break, though with the Vita reaching it’s first holiday season outside Japan a price drop was to be expected.
Still a $100 drop is quite significant, though it would not be unheard of. Previously the more mainstream consoles have seen their prices dropped by that much around the holidays to spur sales. With the Vita’s sales so far being relatively lackluster, this could be the break Sony needs to get the console in the hands of more gamers, and thus expand the market for Vita sales. Consoles themselves have always been a loss leader, with the real profit coming from game sales. This could hook a generation of future Vita fans and help Sony retain their market share against Nintendo handhelds and Smartphone games. If nothing else, market forces will pressure other retailers to match Target’s prices if they keep the deal going.
