Following several years in development through Early Access, the long-awaited survival game The Long Dark has finally seen its official release this week, though the game has already reached some impressive milestones on the road to its official release.

Developer Hinterland Studio has announced that The Long Dark, during its period of availability in Early Access, has sold over 1.3 million units prior to its full release today on consoles and PC, making for a big jump from the previously reported figure of 750,000 copies of the title that were sold back in April of this year.

In addition to the sales milestone, the developer also revealed that a feature film adaptation of the game is currently in the works from Bolt Pictures, with Resident Evil producer Jeremy Bolt on board to help oversee the film's production in collaboration with the game's creative director, Raphael van Lierop, taking on writing responsibilities for its script.

van Lierop explained in a statement that "my goal with Hinterland -- starting with The Long Dark -- has always been to create original entertainment properties that could span multiple mediums, exploiting the storytelling potential of each form." He added that "partnering with Jeremy on this project is the first step in achieving that vision of true cross-platform storytelling in the world of The Long Dark."

Bolt explained in his own statement that he was "immediately taken by the game's stunningly immersive landscapes" and its "eerily solitary and realistic nature" recalling his interest in developing a film based on the game, and added that "it is an honor to try to do justice to it on film."

No other details on the film adaptation of the game have been provided at this time as far as casting, directing, or a release window, though Hinterland did release a new short film titled "Elegy: A Visual Poem of The Long Dark," which offers a 5 and a half minute take on the themes and tone of The Long Dark starring actor Christopher Plummer, directed by Jared Pelletier, and written by van Lierop.

The Long Dark is available now for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac, and Linux - you can check out the new short film tied to the game below:
