Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive delved a bit more into The Surge's animation in a new devblog on the game's Facebook page.

The design process for the in-house two-man animation team starts with them determining how what they are animating effects the gameplay (for weapons and enemies) and story (for NPC's) of The Surge. After determining that, they design how they want the animation to actually look. After that the animators move onto prototyping.

When prototyping, the developers initially use placeholder objects to test timings, distances, and speeds of objects, and then they create the animation. For humanoid characters in The Surge, the developers used motion-capture. Non-humanoid characters objects were animated in 3dsMax.

Finally, the animations are fully implemented into the game engine. It was revealed that The Surge contains almost 2000 single character animations, with Warren (the player controlled character) needing around 600 unique animations so he can talk, react, move, and fight in a convincing way. Each weapon class in The Surge has 20 unique attack animations, all of which can be stringed together in a multitude of ways.

Earlier today, the game's developers announced that The Surge has gone gold. The also detailed the game's PS4 Pro support, which DualShockers also discussed with Deck13's Managing Director Jan Klose in our interview about The Surge, which you can read here.

You can look at some screenshots from the game's animation process below. The Surge will be available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. You can read our preview of an early build of the game here.
