HD collections have come a dime a dozen in the last few years of this generation, and more seem to be coming our way as upscaled versions of games take the leap from last-gen to current gen to release on all platforms available. While some of these can be poorly executed, rushed projects, some seek to really push the bounds on what "next-gen" -- now current gen -- really means. Enter Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix's Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition.

The newest trailer, "The Definitive Lara," features executive producer Scot Amos walking fans through "Next-Gen Lara," who has received more than just a handful of superficial touch-ups. Lara herself has received a full model upgrade, with her head re-typologized to show off higher resolution and more details through increased density, her hair given added Tress FX to act more realistically, sub-surface scattering used to give her skin a more realistic look, and drip maps used to enhance dramatic moments in the game.

The game itself has also been given an overhaul, with updates to the dynamic effects and materials used, and all of Lara's weapons given physics simulation to let them swing naturally from her body and be used more realistically. All of this is to enhance the emotion felt in the game, to increase the desperation, grief and pain players feel when Lara has to survive the trials set before her. And by the looks of it, it works.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is being developed by Crystal Dynamics alongside United Front Games and Nixxes, and will be published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 28th, 2014. For more on Lara Croft and the franchise, check out all of our Tomb Raider news.
