The top 20 shows at the same time good and bad news for Nintendo. 3DS games dominated it so overwhelmingly that 9 out of 10 of the 3DS-specific ranking are in the top 20. On the other hand there’s absolutely no Wii U game in sight in the whole chart.

The PS3 had a great year too, with a situation similar to the 3DS (but of course lower in the overall ranking), surprisingly dominated by Grand Theft Auto V, that left every Japanese game behind. The PS Vita completes the top 20 with two of its biggest games this year: God Eater 2 and Toukiden.

Ultimately, there was no stopping Monster Hunter in Japan, and that was pretty much a given. Dragon Quest VII also demonstrated that Japan still loves the franchise, even if Pokémon X and Y are listed separately and would have grabbed second place otherwise.
