More Uncharted: The Lost Legacy details and tidbits have surfaced thanks to the latest issue of Game Informer (relayed by GameSpot), which features the game as its cover story. Such details include new story information, as well as an interesting tidbit about how Naughty Dog tossed around the idea of different protagonists and stories for the expansion.

As you may know, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is a standalone expansion that focuses in on one of the series’ more prominent characters, Chloe Frazer. Additionally, alongside Chloe at the center is Nadine Rose, who you may know from Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.

However, according to Game Informer's feature story, Naughty Dog considered other options before ultimately settling on Chloe and Nadine. Such combinations included Sam and Sully and (SPOILER FOR UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF'S END) Nathan and his daughter Cassie. According to Naughty Dog, Sam and Sully didn't work because of Sully's age, which would have made him "kind of a liability," and comprised the gameplay. Naughty Dog also considered exploring Sully's past, but this didn't work either, due to the fact that Sully was in the Navy, and that such a scenario didn't create for an exciting game.

Meanwhile, the Cassie idea was canned because Naughty Dog felt giving a teenager a gun, wasn't right.

Interestingly, it was also revealed that Naughty Dog also worked on something "with the scope and ambition of an Uncharted 5," but moved on to focus on the The Last of Us Part II.

According to Naughty Dog, a standalone game featuring Chloe and Nadine was the best option. Creative director Shaun Escayg specifically said the following:

"[It was] the cleanest break without having to tie too much to what we had just wrapped up."

As mentioned above, the Game Informer cover story also sheds new details on the game's story. According to it, Chloe and Nadine are on an adventure to find a jewel that the Hoysala people of India created to honor the Hindu god Ganesh's story. As you would expect, the item is not a real-world item.

Escayg adds the following about the story:

"The understanding of the [Ganesh] story is what is interwoven into Chloe's story. As she goes across her journey, she has one understanding of that story and at the end of the journey she has a new understanding of that story."

"We are taking a lot of time to dig in and consult the right people--to not offend on the religious level, on all levels. We also want to make sure we represent the people of that region properly."

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is set to be the first ever standalone release in history of the Uncharted series and will be Naughty Dog’s most substantial story expansion to date. It will be available as a standalone PS4 game on store shelves, as well as for digital download. If you already purchased the Uncharted 4 Digital Deluxe Edition or the Explorer’s Pack, you will automatically receive the expansion at launch.

Additionally, the expansion will come with access to Uncharted 4’s multiplayer and Survival modes.
