Unreal Engine 4 Developer Diary Showcases the Impressive Layered Materials Pipeline

Today Epic released a new video developer diary showcasing its state-of-the-art Unreal Engine 4, and focusing on the materials editing tools included in the suite.

The video stars Senior Artist Bill Green and Developer Support Manager Zak Parris as they have a chat on the layered materials feature that can give objects a more complex look while adding a lot of flexibility to texturing them. They also show an example by comparing two tricycles, one with standard materials and the second with layered materials.

There is a bit of a “duh” moment when Zak notices that the two tricycles look basically the same, but Bill recovers quickly by showing a rocket that does display a quite telling difference, and it definitely looks impressive. You can check the video out below and judge for yourself.
