Womp, Womp: RAGE Is Not Supporting Dedicated Servers

on November 6, 2009 11:28 AM

PC gamers aren’t going to be happy to hear this news, I can guarantee it. First, they were bombarded with the angering news that Modern Warfare 2 wouldn’t be supporting dedicated servers, to which petitions were formed and signed with zero results other than a “whatever” from Infinity Ward. Then, news that Alien vs. Predator was heading down the same route emerged and, again, antagonized PC gamers. Joining in the frenzy of “we’re not giving you bastards dedicated servers” is the well-known veteran developer id Software with their upcoming title RAGE.

id’s John Carmack states “It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers.” He also added that he’s glad Infinity Ward did this first so that id Software “won’t have to be a pioneer on that. We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”

What does this mean for the PC community? Well, for one, I can bet that a couple of more petitions will be created in order to try and get companies like id Software to change their mind. PC gamers have had a long and free ride in the world of online play; it looks like developers are slamming their iron fists down. Dedicated servers aren’t cheap, folks. We need to stop being so selfish, for crying out loud.

Petition away, my PC gaming brethren.
