Xbox One Users Reporting Standby Mode Causing Save Issues in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

After a long-awaited and highly-anticipated released, CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has earned the acclaim of gaming outlets and players everywhere for its sprawling world and dense variety of action and challenges: unfortunately, not all is well in The Continent as many users, especially on Xbox One, have been reporting crippling issues with game saves being lost, or the game being unable to save.

Players of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt have taken to Reddit and CD Projekt RED’s official forums to report issues being had between the game’s save system and the Xbox One’s standby mode, where many users are reporting issues where resuming the game after several hours leads to issues of either being unable to save or save data becoming corrupted.

While there is no definite trigger that has been identified consistently, users on the Xbox One version of the title have been reporting save data corruption/an inability to save coming primarily from the console’s standby mode, but in different ways, such as returning to the game with a message explaining “You cannot save right now,” or being stuck at one of the game’s loading screens requiring a restart to continue. Several users reported that a hard rest of the Xbox One would allow the game to continue working again, though save data would often be lost in the process.

Developer CD Projekt RED provided Game Informer with several (temporary) solutions to the bug on Xbox One, involving clearing the Xbox One’s system cache:

Please try clearing the cache as instructed below:

– Power down your console

– Unplug the power cable from the back of the Xbox One.

– Wait for two minutes

– Plug the power cable back into the back of the Xbox One

– Monitor the power brick, waiting for it to cycle from a white light to an orange light

– Turn the power on.

This will perform a hard reset of the system.

WARNING! There is another possible solution, however, this may result in losing progress if cloud saving is not on (for more information on cloud saving please consult http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/games/game-saves-in-the-cloud-faq )

The solution:

– Go to the console’s settings / system / clear local saved games.

Upon re-starting the game should re-sync, become functional, and progress should be retained as long as the cloud is on.

CD Projekt RED clarified to Kotaku that while there is no specific timeline just yet for a more permanent solution, the studio did clarify that the issue is a priority on its queue, explaining “we are aware of this issue and we are working to address it as soon as possible. Everyone affected should contact our consumer service as there’s a temporary solution which can help them.”

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
