Today Playtonic Games released a new trailer that gave a roll call for their upcoming 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee. Most of the pun-tastic characters featured all the whimsy that you’d expect from a game emulating titles like Banjo-Kazooie and Mario 64. This included a bumbling industrialist named ‘Capital B’ and an adventuring snake with his body stuck into a pair of pants named ‘Trowzers.’
However the real star of the video wasn’t the titular Yooka and Laylee but a guest spot by indie game darling Shovel Knight. His bulbous armor and babbling series of ‘yos’ (which felt more akin to a viking) fit in perfectly with the childish and cartoony aesthetic of the game. Laylee even fawns over the guest character stating ‘Finally, a decent NPC to work with!’ Unfortunately, that does mean that our dig-dug knight won’t be playable in this game.
Yooka-Laylee currently has an early 2017 release date and is coming to large gamut of platforms: PC, Mac, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, and PS4. There’s no telling if any more guests will drop in unexpectedly but from the way Playtonic Games handled this one, it would be interesting to see what they could do with another hero of the niche scene.
