198X Blurs the Line Between Game and Reality in New Trailer

198X blends five classic arcade genres to make a unique gameplay experience. Hi-Bit wraps the whole thing in an intriguing coming-of-age tale.

198X is being described by developer Hi-Bit Studios as “an arcade epic” The game blends multiple popular arcade genres with a heartfelt, coming-of-age drama to make something that looks completely unique. Give the new trailer a watch below to get a better idea of what you’ll be in store for.

Arguably the most interesting part of the trailer is that it shows 0ff how ambitious 198X is. This is a love letter to the arcades of the 80s, but with a scope that would’ve been impossible to create back then. As you can see in the trailer, the game features five disparate arcade games to play through.

198X features a beat-em-up, a shoot-em-up, a racer, a ninja game, and an RPG. Each of these is fully playable and emulates the best of their genres with their gameplay. That said, the devs have said that they’re adding “unique twists and unexpected turns”. So, expect to see some genre-bending mash-ups as you dig deeper into 198X.

Holding all of this together is the tale of Kid. He finds the arcade as a teen dealing with the changes you go through as you move from youth to adulthood. The devs have hinted that things mastered in every video game will come into play in the Kid’s life. 198X is about “what happens when the line between reality and game starts to blur”.

The game looks gorgeous. Every game has a distinct look that evokes the genre classics while also being so much crisper and cleaner than those old arcade games could have been. The Kid’s world is also very evocative of 1980s culture. The whole package is just beautiful.

198X is coming to PC and PS4 on June 20. The game will be out soon on Switch and Xbox One. While you wait, be sure to check out some of the other indie games we’ve covered in the last few weeks.
