1UP Announced; an Esports Comedy About GamerGate Starring Ellen Page and Paris Berelc

The script is "in the vein of Pitch Perfect but set in the world of eSports."

November 2, 2020

Movies surrounding real-world events are not uncommon. We see films taking inspiration from real-world politics, from celebrity scandals, climate change, and even that upcoming pandemic-inspired movie from Michael Bay, ‘Songbird’. However, one inspiration that I never thought I’d see adapted into a movie was GamerGate, but that’s a thing that’s happening.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, BuzzFeed is branching out into movies with its BuzzFeed Studios. And to kick things off, its first production will be a movie titled ‘1UP’ which follows the story of the character Vivan Lee, who quits her college eSports team due to sexism from the rest of the team. She’s forced to create an all-women’s team due to her scholarship being on the line, and one coach she brings on board is returning to the spotlight after her own GamerGate scandal.

The cast confirmed so far will feature Ellen Page as Vivian Lee, while Paris Berelc will play the coach. The story is being penned by Julia Yorks but with the script “being in the vein of Pitch Perfect but set in the world of eSports with a GamerGate backdrop.” 1UP will be directed by Kyle Newman and is being produced by Richard Alan Reid, Michael Philip, and Jason Moring. Production is slated to begin in November 2020 in Toronto.

Ellen Page is known for being in movies and shows such as Juno (2007), Inception (2010), and the series, The Umbrella Academy (2019-2020) as well as starring in the game, Beyond: Two Souls. Paris Berelc has been in Tall Girl (2019), Deadly Scholars (2018), and Hubie Halloween (2020) to name a few. Kyle Newman has directed a range of films and shows with gaming influences such as Fanboys (2009), and The Return of Return of the Jedi: 30 Years and Counting (2013), as well as a comedy, Barely Lethal (2015).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, BuzzFeed Studios’ mission is “to develop and produce what it sees are socially relevant and high-concept feature films for global millennial and Gen Z audiences.”

The idea of a comedy movie surrounding the topic of GamerGate certainly sounds controversial and concerning, and sure enough, there have been some notable backlash online from those concerned the film won’t properly address the extent of GamerGate. We’ll have to wait and see when more information about the movie is revealed. As for video game adaptions that are in production, we’ve got the upcoming The Witcher season 2, and there’s the Uncharted movie. Netflix has also teased the upcoming Assassin’s Creed live-action series.
