5 Battlefield 2042 Alternatives for Large-Scale War Experience

Looking for something else? Try out these brilliant shooters!

December 2, 2021

Battlefield 2042 is now live, but if you don’t like it, then you’re probably looking for some worthy alternatives. Hopefully, we have a handful of suggestions for you.

After long anticipation, the Battlefield series eventually returned to the modern warfare era with Battlefield 2042, however, most fans believe the game is not even close to their expectations, leaving them in a situation that they either get back to Battlefield V or Battlefield 4.

This is definitely an unfortunate event for fans, but it’s not the end of the world. There are some brilliant multiplayer games out there that could deliver something closer to what you would’ve expected from the new Battlefield probably better than Battlefield 2042.

Will Battlefield 2042 Become Any Better?

To be honest, Battlefield 2042 is probably the beginning of a change in the series. While some players accept the change and enjoy it, some others can’t keep up with all the new stuff.

If your problem with Battlefield 2042 is about technical issues, bugs, or balancing stuff, you can rest assured that all of these problems will be fixed sooner rather than later.

However, if you have a problem with the core gameplay, like the changes in gunplay, or the new specialist system, or the large-scale maps, I’m sorry to tell you that they are here to stay as they are parts of Battlefield 2042‘s DNA.

5 Battlefield 2042 Alternatives

As a trending free-to-play shooter on consoles at the moment, Enlisted is an engaging experience with a gameplay design that could make Battlefield fans fall for it easily.

The game is set in the World War 2 era with lots of weapons, maps, and missions. Enlisted is based on the MMO genre where you can either play various missions with your own squad or jump into multiplayer matches for even more fun.

The game allows each player to create his squad with AI-controlled soldiers, and upgrade them with better equipment by progressing through missions and objectives.

On the other hand, you can rival against other players and their squads, or simply jump into a multiplayer match with real players much similar to what Battlefield delivers.

  • Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC
  • Price: Free

Arma 3

This old fella has been out there for years, but it still has an active community. Although the content support by the developers might not be anything noticeable, it still receives new content from fans and modders.

Arma 3 falls into the hardcore FPS category with a lot of things that you need to master before entering the multiplayer battles. Arma 3 is probably the most tactical-oriented FPS on this list, and you should really think twice before grabbing it.

Now, if you grabbed it, you have tons of things to discover, and a whole year of surprises. This game just never fails to surprise you with things you don’t know.

  • Platforms: PC
  • Price: $29.99

World War 3

Originally launched back in 2018 as an Early Access experience, World War 3 has been developed by The Farm 51, the talented team behind Chernobylite.

The game received mixed reviews when back in the time and gradually lost its player base, until 2021, when the developer revealed that they would re-launch World War 3 in 2022 as a free-to-play multiplayer experience with tons of additions and quality-of-life improvements.

Currently, the game is in the closed beta phase, and you can only participate in these tests by purchasing an in-game pack. The latest closed beta was held in the last week of November.

That being said, World War 3 is supposed to launch earlier in 2022, which means there is not much left until you can play it for free.

World War 3 delivers large-scale battles in the modern era between the lords of the world. Much similar to what you Battlefield 4 delivered.

  • Platforms: PC
  • Release Date: March 2022
  • Price: Free (Closed Beta Test is paid)

Hell Let Loose

If you don’t mind playing hardcore shooters, Hell Let Loose could probably turn into a brilliant experience for you, while almost living up to the scale of Battlefield 2042.

Hell Let Loose recreates huge battles of World War 2 in expansive maps with multiple classes that each one plays a crucial on the battlefield. Playing with squad and communication is a huge plus in Hell Let Loose, so if you’re enlisting for this realistic war experience, bring your friends as well.

The progression in Hell Let Loose might take a little bit longer than other shooters as a single match could take over an hour to come to an end. That said, it has many classes to master with distinct abilities and weapons.

  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC
  • Price: $39.99

Our top choice of the list is yet another hardcore shooter with a special focus on squad-based, tactical play. Hopefully, Squad is not as hardcore as Arma 3, but it still tries to deliver a realistic experience of war. Think of it as a modern version of Hell Let Loose.

Featuring 100-player wars in huge maps, you need to use your gadgets and communicate with your teammates to force your enemies to retreat. Squad is a beast when it comes to the simulation of ground battle whether playing as infantry or using military vehicles.

Just like Hell Let Loose, if you’re going to play Squad, make sure to have some friends with you and turn your Voice Chat on!

  • Platforms: PC
  • Price: $49.99

But None of The Above is a True Battlefield 2042 Alternative

Yes. It’s really hard to find something exactly like Battlefield from a different franchise. All the games above have their own rules and features that you may or may not like.

If you strictly looking for a great Battlefield-like experience, the best option for you is to get back to Battlefield 4, 1, or 5. Hopefully, the Battlefield 4 servers are still live and you can find a handful of good servers in each major region.

Now, it’s your turn to suggest some alternatives for Battlefield 2042. What games out of the Battlefield series have managed to bring you a similar experience so far?
