From UN JE NE SAIS QUOI and UMANIMATION for Switch and PC
Beautifully rendered in a watercolor-esque style, Dordogne is a story-rich French adventure game that follows protagonist Mimi. When Mimi’s grandmother passes away, she’s left with a collection of letters and puzzles that will whisk her away down memory lane.
Set both in the present and the past, you’ll explore both the softly colored city Dordogne and the now-empty home of Mimi’s grandmother. What’s particularly lovely about this game is that you affect both timelines when completing quests. By creating stronger memories in the past, you can positively change the present, and thus help adult Mimi reconnect with her childhood self.
It seems like it’ll be a poignant game centered on memory and family, and don’t we just need more of that these days?
Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly
From Toge Productions for PC, PS4, and Switch
With the first Coffee Talk being so successful, it’s no wonder why Toge Productions has gone ahead with an Episode 2! Carrying on the similar visual novel format, Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly is a casual sim game. Centered on heart-to-heart conversations with coffee shop customers, this is a game that brews up warm friendships along with warm beverages.
This time, the episode will introduce an even more diverse cast of fantasy characters and a wider ingredient list. From latte art to funky flavors to heartfelt stories of fantastical locals, this game guarantees a comforting time.
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk
From Team Reptile for PC and Switch
Funky, poppy, and full of attitude, this stylized game is the perfect 3D platformer for music lovers. You’ll be able to ride around the city equipped with a jet pack and a can of graffiti to build up your REP while facing down metropolitan police. With different move styles, dances, and tricks, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk looks like an eclectic game that pops off the screen.
Though, what’s even cooler than the game’s visuals is its soundtrack. Composed by Jet Set Radio and Sonic Rush composer Hideki Naganuma, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk explodes with life and energetic beats.
Goodbye Volcano High
From KO_OP for PC, PS4, PS5
Combining elements from rhythm games, interactive cinematics, and choice-based narratives, Goodbye Volcano High tells the story of the end of the world. Perhaps surprisingly, that story is a love story.
Players control Fang, a nonbinary dinosaur growing through the pains and changes of high school. Unfortunately, as they finally try to set their life on the right path, the world edges ever closer to the end. Through this, Fang – and the player – rethink what it means to grow and to reconnect through the strength of community.
Additionally, any relationships you choose to follow in the game affect the overall outcome, making each choice feel impactful and personal. It’s visually charming with love at its very soul, making Goodbye Volcano High one to play.
From BlueTwelve Studio for PS4, PS5, and PC
Ever wanted to explore a cyberpunk dystopia, but through the eyes of a cat? Then look no further than Stray! Play as a lost cat separated from its family, roaming through the dark alleys of an unfamiliar city. Though it’s largely an adventure game about trying to return home, you’ll also uncover mysteries within the neon world that could lead to salvation – or if you’re unlucky, danger.
Of course, playing as a cat has its advantages. You can equip a variety of playstyles, from stealthy to bold, to interact with the world around you. Additionally, you’ll have the help of a flying drone friend B12 along the way, making for unexpected gameplay and environmental interactions. Stray certainly stands out in its aesthetics and characters, which is why this game should be an indie game to wishlist in 2022.
