Last week, Asobo Studio and Focus Home Interactive finally revealed that A Plague Tale: Innocence would be releasing on May 14, the same day as Rage 2. Alongside that announcement came the first episode of a new webseries delving into the game's development that focused on the characters and the brother and sister dynamic that is at the center of the game. Today, the second episode of that webseries was released and it focuses on A Plague Tale: Innocence's unique setting: The Dark Ages.

To be more specific, A Plague Tale: Innocence takes place in 1300s during the infamous Black Plague. This is, surprisingly, a period of history not visited by many games. According to Asobo Studio, this was one of the main reasons the developers settled on telling a story in this setting. Another thing the influenced the setting was that Asobo Studio is based out of Bordeaux, France, a city ripe with history.

A Plague Tale: Innocence's Creative Director David Dedeine points out how being located within a city with such a storied history allowed Asobo Studio to really make the environments and whole visual experience accurate to the time period. The game's Art Director actually thinks A Plague Tale: Innocence will break some of the cliches and pre-conceived notions people about the era with its authenticity.

Asobo Studio also studied quite a bit of art from the time period. This allowed them to get a better feeling for how naturalistic lighting looks against the environments at this time. This part of the video then led the developer speaking on a tangent as he discussed how realistic the lighting is and how the developers were keen to make sure that an area was never lit by an unnatural light source. This is a quite common technique and thing people keep an eye out for when creating both film and games, so it's good to see the Asobo Studio is paying attention to those small details as well with A Plague Tale: Innocence.

The developers seem to being trying to display several different aspects of 14th Century life throughout the game as well. "Our heroes encounter different aspects of the period," says Sebastien Renard "At the beginning they have this comfortable, noble life. Beyond that, they encounter the realities of a battle-scarred country, the poor settlements of the 14th Century, the Inquisition, and its hierarchical structure."
