A Sequel to The Outer Worlds May Not Be Open-World, Says Obsidian Entertainment

In a new interview, The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian Entertainment says a sequel to the game may not be fully open-world.

In an interview with Game Informer, Obsidian Entertainment’s Leonard Boyarsky and Nitai Poddar say that a sequel to The Outer Worlds probably won’t feature a fully open-world.

“Possibly. But I think the franchise leans a little bit away from that,” says Boyarsky, the co-game director on The Outer Worlds. “It’s a pulpy space opera where you’re a guy or woman who flies from place to place, exploring a solar system. So to have one giant map defeats that.”

Poddar, a narrative designer on the game, says the game has a natural setting to write dark humor and adventure, while also having funny moments.

When asked about having a sequel to The Outer Worlds having a larger budget, Boyarsky says it’s always a concern when the budget goes up. He says he prefers a smaller budget and team rather than having a $400 million dollar budget with a 250 person team. In addition, he says having a smaller budget and team allows for more creative control and focus on what goes in the game.

“I’m always skeptical of this idea that seems to be going around AAA development that open-world is the standard,” continues Poddar. “That if you’re going to have a very big budget game, that it should be open-world. I think it’s very easy to get burnt out on open-world games because they tend to be so sprawling, so massive, that every open-world you play tends to be the same kind of thing. Go here, collect that, see that landmark. I think there is a lot of value in having an open-ended game that is still structured around individual discrete levels.”

The Outer Worlds launches on October 25 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Additonally, the game will come to the Nintendo Switch at a later date. If you’re interested, you can check out the Game Informer interview below.
