While last year’s Grand Theft Auto V came in to a budget of a whopping $265 million to develop the game, Activision’s upcoming Destiny may prove to have beaten it well over, in terms of the size of its budget and marketing campaign.

Revealed by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick during the Milken conference in Los Angeles, reports detail that Destiny‘s current total budget rakes in at nearly $500 million, officially making it the most expensive video game title ever to be produced. Kotick pointed out in follow-up that this total also includes “marketing, infrastructure support, royalties, and other costs.”

During the conference, Kotick mentioned on behalf of Activision that the studio hopes for Destiny to be its next big franchise, with the studio having had many over the years like Call of Duty and Skylanders. Kotick mentioned:

“If you’re making a $500 million bet you can’t take that chance with someone else’s IP. The stakes for us are getting bigger.”

Destiny launches for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360 on September 9th, 2014.
